The reading and listening are both about cane toads and whether they can be destroyed with the methods described in aforementioned passage. The author is of the opinion that building a national fence, managing volunteers, and introducing virus could stop the spread of cane toad in Australia. The professor casts doubts on each of the claims presented by the author. She states that the author's proposition is based on several unwarranted assumptions and thinking these methods may yield positive results is purely injudicious.
First of all, the author claims that a national fence that resists the advance of toads will prevent them from moving into those parts that are not yet colonized. The point is challenged by the professor. She mentions that young toads are found near rivers and streams. She notes that these water bodies may assist young toads to travel the opposite end of the river, thereby increasing their population on the other end.
In addition, the author argues that cane toads are easy to catch in simple traps and can even be captured by hand as well. He adds that assigning volunteers for these task will be profitable for the citizens of Australia. However, the professor rebuts this argument. She contends that volunteers are untrained and they may fail to differentiate between toads and frogs. She notes that these volunteers may affect the ecosystem by harming frogs instead cane toads.
Finally, the author mentions that developing a disease-causing virus to control the toad populations is another way we can control them from spreading. The professor, on the other hand, asserts that deploying this virus has terrible effect on the ecosystems of Central and South America as many of these toad species are transported from Australia to these areas. And cane toads being the vital part of their ecosystem, attacking them could have adverse effects on their ecosystem as a whole.
In conclusion, the professor effectively refutes each of the claims and theories presented in the passage.
