TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task
The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insects. Unfortunately, the toad multiplied rapidly, and a large cane toad population now threatens small native animals that are not pests. Several measures have been proposed to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia.
One way to prevent the spread of the toad would be to build a national fence. A fence that blocks the advance of the toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they have not yet colonized. This approach has been used before: a national fence was erected in the early part of the twentieth century to prevent the spread of rabbits, another animal species that was introduced in Australia from abroad and had a harmful impact on its native ecosystems.
Second, the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. Cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Young toads and cane toad eggs are even easier to gather and destroy, since they are restricted to the water. If the Australian government were to organize a campaign among Australian citizens to join forces to destroy the toads, the collective effort might stop the toad from spreading.
Third, researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus will be specially designed: although it will be able to infect a number of reptile and amphibian species, it will not harm most of the infected species; it will specifically harm only the cane toads. The virus will control the population of cane toads by preventing them from maturing and reproducing.
The reading passage and lecture are both it is appropriate to use several ways to halt the consciously rapid growth of cane toad. The author strongly postulates that spreading an increase of toad population is detrimental to certain small native species even they are not dangerous pests so it has to be stopped by Australians. On the other hand, The listening adamantly delineates that those methods to abolish the toad's species will somehow ground failure because it will cause unpredictable destruction to the environment due to the several compelling reasons.
First and foremost, According to the author of the excerpt that they can construct a national barrier to limit the spread of toads throughout australia also this approach used before to halt the increase of rabbits which same as harmful to the local ecosystem too. Nonetheless, The professor offsets these points by declaring that it is true this way maybe give a presumed result to Australians but in the river system which flows one side to another bring them to another side of the lake so even a few toads can dramatically flourish in this area.
On top of this, in the lecture the professor elaborates the points by bringing up that inexperienced volunteers easily destroy native frogs and even endangered species because they look like very similar to cane toad for many external characteristics. these claims refute the writer's indications about another method is to using volunteers power to obliterate the toad of population biomass. Furthermore, the cane toad eggs are easy to collect and destroy them also they are simply trapped and be captured by bare hands without much effort.
The text lastly insists that spreading a disease-causing a little virus throughout australia is a very effective way to destroy them because it does not affect the other amphibian species but especially influence on the cane toad population significantly. Moreover, this virus inhibits them from growing and breeding as usual. The speaker in the lecture counters these implications by asserting that inventing virus can be fatal to the original habitat of this population in america because a lot of pet fanciers convey them to the Central and North america easily without any firm considerations so the native ecosystem may suffer a lot due to the virus development.
