The reading passage contends that the number of birds in the United States will declined due to the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the idea in the reading passage that natural habitats of birds will continue to decrease as human populations and settlements continue to expand. This is attributed to the fact that it is true that in urban place, birds’ natural habitat has been disappeared. However, while specific species are decreasing in their population, some species are increasing in their populations, such as hawk. Many people have claimed that there are many hawks which makes them disturb. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the idea in the reading passage that as human population is growing, agricultural activities also increase. This is because even bird habitats have destructed in the past for agricultural use, wilderness areas would be no longer converted to agricultural use because of new developed crop. Using this crop, people are not necessary to destruct the bird habitats. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is refuted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that the use of chemical pesticides will be increased to keep pace with expanding human settlements and increasing agriculture. It is obvious that it is true chemical pesticides result in declines in bird population. However, there are two solutions to solve this problem. First, scientists have developed new type of pesticides which would not contaminated water. Second, people’s thinking against traditional pesticides resistance will increase and they are trying to not use chemical pesticides. As a result, the reading passage’s final point is contradicted.
