The reading and lecture both discuss the possible solutions to protect the Torreya Taxifoha from extinction. While the reading provides three ideas to save the Torreya, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading avers that we can reestablish the Torreya at the cooling microclimate areas at florida to protect them from any extinction. On the other hand, the professor argues this notion by saying that it is unlikely to be successful. This is because the cooler microclimate arears are affected by global temperature. In addition, the global warming will increase the temperature and Florida does not have too much rain. So, the microclimate will became dryer. As a result, the Torreya can not survive ate Florida microclimate.
Secondly, the article mentions that we can apply the assisted migration program to Torreya and move them to new area at the north. However, the professor rejects this point by saying that when human moved the black local tree to new environment, these trees killed other plants and trees in that area. So, many trees and plants extincted at the new habitat. Consequently, the assisted migration has negative outcome for the new environment.
Lastly, the reading states that we can save the Torreya at the research centers in order to keep them save, and the researchers can do plenty of experiments. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this point by explaining that the Torreya population can not resist the diseases at the research centers. Furthermore, they have to be in large population and genetic diverse in order to survive at that place. However, the research centers do not have enough capacity to get the Torreya diversity. As a result, the reseach centers can not save Torreya on the long term.
