The reading passage contends that there are three theories in terms of extinction of Steller’s sea cow, who once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast Siberia. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several point that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the theory in the reading passage that groups of native Siberian people have overhunted the sea cows. This is attributed to the fact that the native Siberian people were quite small so that they could not hunt the sea cows, which were massive creatures with 9 meter long and 10 ton weights. Thus, the reading passage’s first theory is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the theory in the passage that the sea cows may have been became extinct resulted from ecosystems disturbance that caused a decline in the sea cow’s food, kelp. This is because if kelp population have been declined by ecological changes, other marine creatures also would be declined. However, there is no report of a declines of other animal. It means that kelp would not be disturbed this theory suggests. Consequently, the reading passage’s second theory is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the theory in the reading passage that the sea cow population may have hunted by European fur traders who came to the island after 1741 and possessed weapons that allowed them to quickly kill a large number of the animals. It is obvious that a large number of the animals already have been declined before their arrival. The process of declining was ongoing about 100 years ago. As a result, the reading passage’s final theory is refuted.
