TPO-20 - Integrated Writing Task
The passage states that the "let it burn" policy is not a good policy and it has three kinds of damage to the forests. however, the lecturer finds the reasons provided by the passage dubious and gives some evidence in order to refute them all.
The passage claims that the Yellowstone fires caused tremendous damage to the park's trees and other vegetation. When the fire died out, what had been a national treasure seemed like a devastated wasteland. Conversely, the lecturer asserts that fire is a natural part of a forest's life and it is not only destructive, but also constructive too. Even though it causes trees to burn, it lets new vegetation to appear in the area. As an example after the Yellowstone fire the area was colonized by new plants that had the opportunity to grow after the trees were burned and the shadow of the trees was removed. Another point is that some seeds of some certain sorts of plants needs high temperature to germinate and after the fire these plants had the opportunity to grow.
Furthermore, the passage holds the view that after the large fire the park's wildlife was affected as well. Large animals were seen fleeing from fire and smaller species were unable to escape. Also the food chain in the area will be disrupted for the animals who survived. In contrast, the lecturer underlines the fact that fire will provide new opportunities for small plants and small animals who inhabit these small plants. For example, rabbits and haier and the predators who feed on them will come to the area.
Finally, the passage asserts that the fire comprises the value of the park as tourist attraction, which in turn will have negative consequences on the local economy. On the other hand, the lecturer dismisses the issue due to the fact that fire will effect tourists if they happen every year, but they do not happen every year and the fire in Yellowstone was vast because of reasons like great wind and no rain and some other factors. And even after that great fire the tourists came to the area the next year and each year.
