This material addresses the question of the necessity to extinguish forest fires when they occur. The reading passage suggests that the so-called ''let it burn'' policy should be revised as it has proved to be unpredictable /or irrational/. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating that fire has also creative role.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that fires that took place in Yellowstone park in 1988 seriously damaged its trees and other plants since about one third of the territory of the park had been burnt out. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues that vegetation recovered fast enough. Moreover, a more diverse ecosystem emerged in the park inasmuch the plants that had been deprived of the possibility to grow got that chance in the new environment caused by the fires.
Additionally, the article posits that animals suffered significantly from the fires, as well. Some of them were killed, some others were able to survive but were not able to return since the food chains were disrupted. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, she mentions that wildlife also recovered, and new animal species such as rabbits and hares got an opportunity to develop. As to the food chains, they became more diversed, too.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that tourists left the region after the fires - a fact which influenced the local business, as well. This goes counter to the information in the listening passage, according to which, the tourist came back to the park the next year, so they were doing the other years since the fires like the one took place /occurred/ in 1988 have never repeated in Yellowstone.
