TPO 20 – “let it burn” policy
In the reading, the author claims that the "let it burn" policy was very damaging significantly when it happened in Yellowstone park by pointing out three reasons of support. However, finding this claim questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that Yellowstone fires caused a huge amount of damage to the park's trees vegetation. Smaller plants were completely damaged. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up the idea that the Yellowstone fires caused diversity in the vegetation. For example seeds of plants were in a good situation to grow in a high level of temperature.
In addition, the reading holds the view that the destruction of habitat and eliminate of food chains threatened the park wildlife. Conversely, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that the Yellowstone fire helps the existence of new small plants habitat which could grow in the shade of fallen trees and created a new opportunity for some animals like rabbit and herd to feed on this small plants. The lecturer explains that predators feed on these animals and as a result, a new food chain had formed.
Finally, the author asserts tourism industry was threatened as the last point for supporting the changing of the “let it burn" policy. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that if this event had happened every day, the claim was true but the reason of decreasing tourism at that year was because of low rainfall and strong wind and some other natural disaster. As he stated, the year after that, visitors came back so tourists and the local economy based on tourism increased year by year.
