In the lecture, the professor asserts that although there genetically modified trees shows some benefits, they present serious problems. This contradicts the reading, which states that planting genetically modified trees promises to bring number of benefits.
First. although genetically modified trees my resists some of the threats the face, they usually can not challenge new ones because they are more uniformed. In the contrary, natural trees have a variety of species so when some species are threaten by new infection or pesticide, some other species can be resistant the these threats, which mean they have better survival rate than genetic modified ones. This opposes the article, which says that genetically modified trees are designed to be harder in order to overcome any threats.
Second, the professor mentions that the companies, which make these genetically modified trees, charge farmer for seed; moreover, farmers are required by the law to pay a fee to companies whenever they want to grow new seeds. This increases the financial burden on farmers and adversely affect the economics. On the other hand, the reading passage cites that genetically modified trees promise to bring number of economic benefits to farmers.
Finally, the speaker asserts that genetically modified trees grow more aggressively than natural trees. This mean that they compete with other natural trees over water, and nutrients in the soil. This challenges the text, which mentions that planting genetically modified trees can prevent the overgrowth of wild trees.
