TPO 21: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about genetically modified trees. The author of the reading passage explains the benefits of these trees. However, the lecturer points to some problems associated with modified threes.
First of all, the author claims that genetically modified trees can survive unusual conditions like alteration in climate or invasion of pests. For example, in Hawaii, genetically modified papaya trees are more resistance to a special virus than the native papaya trees. On the contrary, the speaker refutes this claim by explaining that in each species of trees there are some individual trees that are resistant to the aforementioned condition and even other trees con not tolerate the condition, they will survive the species. However, genetically modified trees have more uniform characteristics and are easily wiped out by alteration of climate or new pest invasion.
Secondly, the author states that genetically modified trees are economically more beneficial than other trees, as they grow faster and give greater yield of fruits. By contrast, the lecturer argues that genetically modified trees have hidden costs. For instance, after gathering the crops farmers can not easily plant new trees. By law, they should pay the company whenever they want to plant new trees.
Finally, the reading implies that genetically modified trees prevent overexploitation of old trees for purposes like providing firewood or timber for construction. As modified trees can grow at a fast pace they could be a good source of wood. On the other hand, the lecturer rejects this assertion by pointing out that genetically modified trees are highly aggressive rather than normal trees. They could be problematic for normal trees as they are usually planted between normal trees and hence compete with them over resources like water, soil nutrient and sunlight. Therefore genetically modified trees put norma trees into danger.
