The text mentions about the genetic modified (GM) trees and their benefits on today's society. According to the text, GM trees are more likely to survive to adverse pests and certain clime, they also tend to have better environment resistance. Also they have cost benefits and stop over exploitation of wood. However, the lecturer strong disagree with all the points presented in the text and also give examples of it.
Firstly, the text stated that genetic modified trees are tougher and more resistance than natural trees. The lecture contradicts the text saying that GM trees are design to be uniform and therefore it only adapts to certain types of clime and new pests. Natural trees are more likely to survive a bigger range of adversest.
Secondly, the text stated the cost benefits associated with GM trees. As the trees are likely design to grow faster and give more fruits in a short period of time, farmers will have better results with it. The lecturer refutes this statement, stating the cost benefits are not that great if you compare the price of normal seeds with GM seeds, which are much more expensive. Also, by law farmers must always buy the seeds from authorized producers .
Thirdly, according to the text GM trees avoid over exploitation of wood and can preserve the environment. The lecturer refutes this idea arguing that GM trees grow aggressively and compete with natural trees for resources, such as: water, minerals and nutrients for the overall nature.
To conclude, the lecturer advocates against all the tree points presented by the text and reaffirm the benefits to plant natural trees.
