The author describes that planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits and she brings three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the professor explains that although genetic modification provides some benefits, they are not as great as the author's arguments. She refutes each of the author's points on the rational grounds.
First of all, the writer states that genetically modified trees are designed to be harder than natural trees; that is, they are more likely to survive than their unmodified counterparts. Nevertheless, the professor posits that some natural trees can resist harsh condition which ensure the survival of these trees. In fact, unmodified trees are genetically diverse and even if some unfavorable conditions happen, such as poor climate condition, insects and pests, some of them can resist this situation. To be more specific, even though most of them will die, the remain trees will ensure the survival of their diversity. She adds that much of the modified trees are uniform and if unexpected condition happens, such as climate change and appearing new pests, they will likely to be wiped out.
Second, according to the reading, genetically modified trees promise to bring a number of economic benefits to those who grow them. Conversely, the speaker brings up the idea that there are hidden costs associated with the genetically modified trees. As a matter of fact, farmers should pay more charge for the seeds than the natural trees; moreover, they should pay the company every time they plant the genetically modified trees.
Third, the writer expresses that the utilize of genetically modified trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. However, the speaker points out that using genetically modified trees cause more damage to nature. To clarify, planting genetically modified trees grow more aggressively than natural trees. Since they grow among the natural trees, they should compete for soil, water and other resources which adversely affect the growth of natural trees. In addition, genetically modified trees lead to crowding out the natural trees.
