The author describes that there are three solutions to tackle declining Torreya taxifoha trees and brings up three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the professor explains that unfortunately none of these ways are promising and they cannot provide satisfactory solutions and refutes each of the author's points on rational grounds.
First of all, the writer states that the Torreya can be reestablished in the same location in which it thrived for many years. Nevertheless, the professor posits that the coolest and dampest microclimates strongly is susceptible of the effect of the larger regions. In fact, as the global warming, the temperature of the climate rises, and the wetlands drained, this region becomes drier. So, Torreya cannot survive in this area of the microclimate.
Second, according to reading, the Torreya can be moved to a completely different location, far away from its Florida microclimate. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that scientists helped another black locust tree before. They move this tree to the North. As a matter of fact, this tree spread successfully and quickly, but lead to the killing of other plants and trees. To be more specific, these endangered plants and trees are threatened to become extinct which means that making some changes may cause the unpredictable outcome.
Third, the author expresses that Torreya tree can be kept in the research centers to be preserved. However. the speaker points out that keeping Torreya in these centers are not a good solution. In fact, the population of trees kept in these centers cannot be able to resist the diseases. More precisely, provided that the population of these trees should be relatively large and genetically diverse, such as what we have seen in the wildlife, this plan will be successful, whereas, Torreya population has not enough capacity and preserving Torreya brings about the diseases problems in the long term.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make any sense.
