The professor explains three clear arguments opposing the points that stated in the reading passage about the ineffectiveness of using ethanol as alternative of gasoline.
First, the professor argues that ethanol does not add greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. As he states, although vehicles, which use ethanol, emit carbon dioxide to environment, we should consider that ethanol is made by corn that absorbs carbon dioxide when it is growing. Therefore, using ethanol as fuel counteracts the idea of more carbon dioxide emission in the environment. So, the professor repudiates the reason presented by the reading passage which states using ethanol and gasoline do not differ in global warming because both of them release greenhouse gasses to atmosphere like carbon dioxide.
Second, the reading passage mentioned that production of ethanol will results in severe reduction of available plants for other applications such as cultivating livestock. Also, it states that only 10 percent increase in need for ethanol in U.S will cause to assign more than 60 percent of corn in order to satisfy demand. Nevertheless, the professor draws attention to process of ethanol production that use cellulose instead of whole corn. As he claimed, cellulose is not eaten by animals, thus, we would have sufficient corn not only for livestock but also for manufacturing ethanol.
Third and last, the reading passage asserts that ethanol will face with problem with gasoline in pricing if governments cut off tax subsides, because ethanol's price will increase significantly. On the contrary, the professor disproves the idea due to the fact that more demand for ethanol results in lower breakeven point in production, so, the price will decrease. Based on his statements, if demand for ethanol will enhance three times, price of ethanol will decline 40 percent which means higher competence ability for ethanol in competition to gasoline.
