The reading passage contends that there are several reasons why ethanol fuel is not a good alternative for gasoline. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the validity of the idea in the reading passage that one of the biggest environmental problems caused by gasoline use would not be solved as the increased use of ethanol fuel. This is attributed to the fact that it is true carbon dioxide would be released by ethanol when it is burned. However, carbon dioxide would be removed by planting plants. This is due to the fact that plants are capable to absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It will counteract carbon dioxide caused by ethanol and probably remove released carbon dioxide. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer cast doubt on the idea in the reading passage that the amount of plants available for uses other fuel would be reduced by the production of significant amounts of ethanol dramatically. This is because when ethanol is producing, main ingredient is chlorophyll, which is cell wall of plants. It is not eaten for feeding farm animals and much of the corn grown in the United States is still remained, not wasted. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that when competing with gasoline on price, ethanol fuel will not be parallel. It is obvious that if ethanol producers were not helped as tax subsidies by the United States government, ethanol fuel will be affordable in the short period. However, it will be reversed by general phenomenon. When products related to ethanol fuel are increased, the price of ethanol also will be decreased. And according to study, the products with ethanol will not only be increased by three times than now, but also the price of ethanol will be dropped by 40% compared with current price. Thus, the reading passage’s final point is refuted.
