The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is about the decrease of population of yellow cedar in northwestern North America. Considering this, the author offers three hypotheses to clarify this decline. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author’s assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the ways that the reading just argued. The lecturer demonstrates three reasons to reject the points in the reading.
The first criticism of the passage against which the lecture argues is that insect parasites, especially cedar bark beetle, can be consider as one of the factors of the decrease of yellow cedar population. As stated by the professor, healthy yellow cedar trees are resistant to parasites due to the fact that their barks and leaves are saturated with things, which are poisonous for insects. Moreover, beetles always attack damaged trees, rather than healthy ones. So, it is a fallacious conclusion that insect parasites are a reason for decreasing the yellow cedar population.
Moreover, unlike the reading which claims that bears' feeding habits, which claw cedar trees in order to eat the tree barks, the professor illustrates that although bears' feeding habitats damage cedar trees, brown bears cannot be countered as one of determinants of the decline of the cedar trees. Owing to the fact that population of the cedar trees is diminishing in both islands and main lands of North America. Considering the fact that bears do not live on islands, and the decline of the yellow cedar occurs with and without trees, it is not true to consider brown bears as a candidate for the decline of the cedar tree.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the reading that changing in climate pattern has changed the cedar's root systems and has made them more sensitive, saying that it is true that the cedar's roots suffer from frost damage. However, the reading does not account an important factor, which is elevation. Due to the fact that there are more dying cedar trees in the low elevation in comparison to high elevation, which are suffering from freezing. Therefore, this factor is not convincing too.
