The article states that population of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been declined since about 1880 and provides three reasons to explain it. The professor thinks that those reasons are not convincing and opposes each reason.
First, the reading claims that the yellow cedar declines due to insect parasites, the cedar bark beetle. The professor refutes this point and explains that cedar trees are very famous for its powerful resistance. When cedar bark attacks the trees, it will be poisoned by the toxic chemical from the trees. Therefore, the insects will be dead instead of the trees.
Second, the article says that brown bears eating the tree bark are another reason for the decline. The professor also refutes this statement by proving that the place yellow cedar grows is in northwestern North America where there are no brown bears living. Obviously, no bears would harm the cedar.
Third, the reading states that climate change is the final reason. However, the professor opposes this point as well. He explains that only fine cedars tree usually start growing in the later winter which means the weak and sensitive trees are already dead in warm weather. Therefore, all of the left are surely have the strong ability to survive the cold weather and not easy to be killed.
