The reading and lecturer both about yellow cedar in northwestern North America which the population of the tree is declining for. The author of the reading argues that the declining of cedar population is due to external factors. The lecturer cast doubt the claims in the article. He thinks that the entire factors said by the article are not relevant.
First of all, the article says that dropping population of yellow cedar mab be caused by insect parasites. She thinks that cedar bark beetle attack the cedar trees and the larvae eat the wood. This hypothesis refuted by the lecturer. He says that yellow cedar is much more resistent. He add the information that the tree produce a deadly poison for the insect. Moreover, the study reveal that the beetle only attack damage tree.
Secondly, the author mention that bears is one of the reason for declining population of yellow cedar. She says that the bear claw the cedar in order to eat the tree bark. This opinion challenged by the lecturer. He says that the bear not responsible for the declining of the cedar population. He says that even in other area that no bear life, the population of tree is still decline.
Finally the author mentions that gradual changes of climate may contribute for this event. She believes that the roots are sensitive and likely suffer from partial freezing. On the other hand, the lecturer states that frost damage of the roots is more likely not caused dead of the tree. He says that the tree is still dead even in lower elevation that has warm temperature.
