The passage elaborates on three main reasons attributed to yellow cedars’ drop. However, the lecture finds these reasons inadequate and believes that none of the mentioned reasons can contribute to yellow cedars’ decline.
First, according to the recorded evidence, insect parasites, particularly cedar bark beetle is the main reason of cedars’ decline, for it attacks trees and eats the wood. On the other hand, the lecturer states that cedar is more resistant to parasites than other kinds of trees. In fact, cedar contains saturated powerful chemicals which are poisonous to beetle parasites. Thus, it is unlikely for cedars to be diminished by beetles.
Bears are conceived as the second main factor that plays a role in cedars’ decline. Bears tend to climb the tree in order to eat the tree bark, a substance with high sugar content, which may weaken the trees. However, the lecturer maintains that bears are not responsible for cedars’ decline since there is evidence that shows cedar population is declining not only in mainlands but also in islands in which no bears exist.
Climate change in northwestern North America has significantly changed the time of roots growth. As a result, the root, which is a sensitive part of the tree especially to frost, gets hurt from the frost which may finally cause the tree to die. Nevertheless, the lecturer declares that many more trees die in lower elevation with high temperature in comparison with higher elevation with low temperature. This statement conclusively challenges the point made in the passage.
