TPO-24 - Integrated Writing Task Animal fossils usually provide very little opportunity to study the actual animal tissues, because in fossils the animals' living tissues have been largely replaced by minerals. Thus, scientists were very excited recently
The reading and the lecture are both about the Tyrannosaurus rex. The author of the reading believes that T. rex might have still the remains of actual tissues of the animal. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that by analyzing the leg of the dinosaur, it shows that there are hollow spaces in it which blood vessels are located. The author mentioned they also found out that soft, flexible substances are also inside the blood vessels. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the soft tissues in the bone channels are not the remains of blood vessels of the T. Rex. Further, He argues that when dinosaurs died, bacteria will engulf the hollow spaces in bones, thus, traces of soft tissues will not be apparent.
Secondly, the author contends that microscopic examination shows presence of red blood cells. The article notes that this spheres has iron containing material which is necessary in the production of red blood cells. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the iron filled substance they found was only identical to other primitive animals. He elaborates on this by mentioning that small amount of red blood cells are not usually originated from T. Rex.
Finally, the author states that it contained collagen. The articles establishes that collagen can be also be seen in biochemical material that is associated with bone tissues. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it is impossible to see collagen in animal which is 100 years old. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that traces of collagen that was found on the dinosaur must be from scientist who handle the bones of these species
