The article discusses the threats of the zebra mussel; a freshwater shellfish; could cause upon freshwater fish populations in North America, and provides three supports. The professor, however, indicates that it is not proven that they are a real threat to other species, and he refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the article states that the zebra mussels are unstoppable from spreading. The professor explains that it is true that in the past it was hard to control the zebra mussel from spreading; since they attach themselves to ships' bottom and travel through the ocean, But it is clear now that ocean's salty water could easily kill the zebra mussel.
Second, the article claims that zebra mussels could dominate new habitats. The professor disagrees and states that when they spread; local birds could easily change their diet and become zebra's new predators and hunt them, and preventing them from further spreading.
Finally, the author says that zebra mussels could cause a decline in the overall fish population in habitats where they become dominant. The professor refutes this point as well and explains that if the zebras become dominant, it is highly unlikely that they cause the overall fish population to decline, because on the one hand, it is true that they eat fishes that eat plankton, but on the other hand, the could increase bottom fishes population grow higher.
