Both the passage and the lecture discuss the invasion of the zebra mussel, which is a shellfish native of Europe and has a long history of invading and spreading into other waters. The passage claims that the invasion has reached to America and there is little anyone can do to stop it. However, the lecturer argues that the animal is neither unstoppable nor purely harmful.
First, the passage presents the method that this shellfish use to spread: it lives on the bottom of a ship or on its ballast- water inside the ship use to have a proper balance- and it has reached America by the same means. Then concludes that we can forecast the fish taking over the nation. Nonetheless, The lecturer points out that there are methods that we can use to prevent this. He points out that we can simply ask for the ship to empty their ballast in the sea, consequently, the mussel would die because of salinity.
Second, the text posits that the mussels easily displace fish out of their environment and become dominant, because they do not have any predators. The lecturer rebuts this argument by pointing out that some birds can accommodate to eating mussel shellfish. Furthermore, he highlights that these birds can easily control the fish's populations.
Finally, the author argues that the mussels can be harmful to other fish because they eat plankton, which is the main source of much other freshwater fish. The lecturer explains that while the zebra mussels can harm some species they can benefit others, like the fish that feed near the shore.
