Although the author suggests three main hypotheses to support the reasons of Little Ice Age during the years of 1350 until 1900 CE, the professor finds them dubious and brings up three reasons to refute them all.
Firstly, the author states that one of the causes of Little Ice Age was disruption of ocean current which led melted glacier sent a large amount of cold water into the Gulf Stream because of warm climate before Little Ice Age. However, the professor states that more data on the fact that disruption on oceans happened in Europe and North America. In addition, no data has been found about southern parts such as New Zealand and South Africa which means if ocean disruption caused cooling water and making Little Ice Age, they must have been in this parts as well.
Secondly, the reading holds the view that Little Ice Age was due to the volcanic eruption which made a dust cloud and sulfur gas into the atmosphere and blocked the earth from sunlight. In contrast, the professor gainsays this idea and states that although the dust made the weather cooler, this dust did not have enough strength to make climate cool. Besides, not enough visual records were noticed which means that these effects such as snow green brown did not influence routinely and they were temporary.
Thirdly, the author argues that decrease of human population which caused agricultural lands to be useless, instead, growing numerous amount of trees in these lands was one of the important reasons of Little Ice Age. Carbon dioxide keeps the Earth warmer and the present of trees caused carbon dioxide absorbed more and the Earth become cooler. On the other hand, the speaker asserts that it is true that in a short period of time the population of people declined but after a while, they started to grow up again and it led more agricultural lands come back to use to grow crops for the thrived human population. Thus, the human population did not have a long term effect on Little Ice Age.
