The reading passage provides three possible proposals that explain the cause of the Little Ice Age. However, the professor casts doubt on these proposals and says all of each are outdated and none of each explain the phenomena. He refutes each of the author's specific point by rising serious counter-arguments that are as listed below.
First of all, the author posits that the disrupting of the Gulf ocean may have been the cause of the Little Ice Age. and this due to the melting giant glaciers. Conversely, the professor points out that cooling temperature has happened also on South atmospheres such as South Africa and no explanation of this. Therefore, this proposal is invalid.
Secondly, the text mentions that gases and dark clouds of dust that came out from a volcanic eruption could have caused the Little Ice Age by blocking sunlight from reaching Earth's surface. The lecturer says that it is true if clouds were in a significant amount. However, this was not the case. He sheds some light on this issue, stating that there was not any visual effect such as colorful sunset or gray snow. There was not any report of that during the Little Ice age. Therefore, this proposal is not strong enough to explain the phenomena.
Last but not least, the reading states that the remarkable declines in the human population may have been an indirect effect of the cooling climate. This is because human no longer uses the areas in the forest for growing fields that absorb greenhouse gases. The speaker disputes this point too by saying that forest is not strong enough of leading the long-term cooling (the Little Ice Age). To elucidate more on this issue, he points out that human came back to grow in forest area quickly as it seemed nothing happened before.
All in all, according to the professor, all the author's specific proposals for the cause of the Little Ice Age are none plausible and very old.
