In the reading passage, the author mentions three hypotheses formulated by the scientists, explaining why the Little Ice Age occurred. The lecturer, however, presents counterargument against these theories.
The first theory suggests that the melting glaciers would probably result the disruption of the Gulf Stream, which is an influential current in affecting Earth's climate. The lecturer rebuts this point, contending that the ocean current only influenced the European and North American, there were no cooling in south hemisphere. Namely, the disruption was unable to contribute to the Little Ice Age as well.
The second assumption states that volcanic eruption would have resulted in climate cooling. It is plausible that abundant of dust could have blocked the sunlight, bringing about the decrease in global temperatures. The lecturer refutes this view, pointing out that there is no record, such as colorful sunset or gray snow, indicating the serious effects of volcanic eruption. Hence, the volcanic eruption is merely not powerful enough to cause (sharp) dwindling in global temperatures.
The third hypothesis claims that decreases in human population may have indirectly contributed to the Little Ice Age. As farmlands replaced forest trees, which absorb greenhouse gas, with the presence of mankind, there would be higher amount of greenhouse gas. The lecturer contradicts this assertion, arguing that the forest may have not stayed long enough to contribute the cooling of climate since human population could have grown back fast. Consequently, human population could not result the long-term global cooling.
