Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity. Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary’s claim.
The reading and lecture are both about Robert E. Peary who was an arctic explorer and claimed that he reached the North Pole. The author of the reading presents some strong evidence that supports Robert's claim. However, the lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that there is no solid evidence of Robert's claim and the reasons are unconvincing.
To begin with, the author argues that the National Geographic Society conducted a committee where they investigated the record and instrument used by Robert. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He mentions that the committee was not objective. Moreover, Robert's friend involved with the investigation and also they did not examine the data and instrument carefully. Besides, the investigation was only for two days and his friend may be somehow biased.
Second, the writer suggests that recently a British explorer who travelled the North Pole in less than 37 days. He also claims that the type of dogsled and breed of dogs he used was the same as Robert's. However, the lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that Tom Avery's sled weight was less than Robert's. He also states that Tom Avery dropped some of the food in the middle of the path and his food was provided from the plane.
Third, the author posits that the photographs clearly proved that he reached at the North Pole because from the photographs the sun position was clearly visible. He also additionally says that the position of the sun in the same as today's position. In contrast, the lecturer position is that photographs did not prove anything because that time camera was fuzzy and unfocused. He also notes that from these photographs it is difficult to measure and calculate the sun's position.
