The article is discussing the issue that edmontosaurs survived the winter by migrating south to hospitable regions; however, the professor in the lecture holds a point of view against the article for several reasons.
First of all, the article mentions that the edmontosaur’s diet supports the migration hypothesis since they needed to find plants which did not grow in the winter. On the contrary, the professor says that the edmontosaurs didn’t have to migrate since North Slope was warmer than today where the sun shone 24 hours during summer which provided plants with a great growth condition. Furthermore, while the plants would die in the winter, the edmontosaurs could still eat the plants which contained lots of nutrients.
Second, the article states that edmontosaur must be migratory animal since the modern-day animals which lived in herd are migratory. In contrast, the professor suggests that living in herd does not represent that the animals have the tendency to migrate. They lived in herd for many reasons such as protecting themselves from the predators. Also, for example, elks live in herb in Northwest America but they do not migrate.
Finally, the article shows that edmontosaurs were physically capable of migrating long distances. However, the professor argues that the young edmontosaurs could not endure the traveling in long distances and they would slow down the herb. Thus, edmontosaurs tended to stay in North Slope since they could not leave the juveniles behind which could not survive by themselves.
