TPO 3- Integrated Task

The reading and the lecturer are both about one of Rembrandt’s paintings. The author of the reading thinks that the painting cannot be Rembrandt’s since it has some signs that are not typical in his other paintings. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that based on a recent examination, it can be proven that all of the author’s reasons are not actually true.
To begin with, the author argues that there is a different style in the woman’s coat and cap in the painting, which Rembrandt would have never made that. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that after doing some tests, it was revealed that the woman’s coat was not a part of the original painting. Additionally, she says it was probably added later in order to increase the value of it.
Secondly, the writer suggests light and shadows are not as great as other Rembrandt’s arts. In the article, it is said that light reflection on the woman’s face does not match her dark fur collar. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that in the original portrait the collar had a light collar and based on that the reflection was realistic.
Finally, the author posits that there are several layers of wood that are glued together. Moreover, in the article, it is stated that it is unlikely for Rembrandt to do so. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that these pieces of wood were added later. He notes that the original wood is from the same tree that was used in his other paintings.
