TPO 31- Integrated Task
The article passage and professor both discuss the authenticity of theories attributed to Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur. The author contends that critis opposed the idea that Sinosauropteryx had feathers, stating three conspicuous reasons so as to support. However, the lecturer, having a critical point of view, casts a shadow of doubt on what the author proposes. She exlpains that the evidences are strong that support Sinosauropteryx had feathers and the arguments in the reading are unconvincing, and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the author claims that the pattern o lines surrounding the skeleton bones may were formed after the animal's death. On the contrary, the professor, not having been convinced, declares that it is unlikely that the lines are results of decomposition. She also proceeds to state that there are other fossils found in the same site, but their skins are well preserved in ash. Therefore, it is likely that the fossils of Sinosauropteryx are also well preserved. Thus, the lines are feathers.
Second, the author posits that the lines are fossilized remains of frills. The lecturer opposes this point, saying that chemical analysis proves the opposite. To elucidate more on this issue, she states that the chemical composition of feathers is different from frills.Feathers have a huge amount of protein, but frills do not have it. Nonetheless, chemical analysis showed that the functional structures contain a lot of protein. Consequently, they are feathers.
Finally the author highlights the fact that the location of lines are along the backbone and the tail which make the useless for flight and thermoregulation; thus, they were not feathers. However, the proffesor explains that feathers have other uses. She sheds some light on this premise, stating that there is a bird, peacock, that has long feathers along the tail. It displays them to attract a mate. On the other hand, recently scientists showed that the sturctures of the fossils are colorful, i.e. orange and white. This supports the theory that Sinosauropteryx used feathers for displaying.
