The article and the reading are contradicting with each other, in terms of evidence of fine lining on fossils of Sinosauripteryx dinosaurs. The author of the reading believes that the lining present on fossils cannot be feathered of dinosaurs and presents three theories against it. However, the lecturer casts doubt about the claim presented in the article and negates three ideas explained in the paragraph.
First of all, according to the reading, the fine line structure might have been developed after the dinosaur's death, and the skin might be decomposed into fibers, and those lines were misinterpreted as evidence of feathers. On the contrary, the speaker undermines the argument presented in the article. Furthermore, he discusses that it could not be formed after decomposition since they have found well-preserved fossils of other animals under volcanic ash at the same site. Hence, the theory of decomposition for skin is totally wrong.
Secondly, the author posits that the fine lines are more more likely to be fossilized remains of frills since many dinosaurs had frills growing out of some parts of their body. Although the lecturer refutes this by asserting that the feathers and frills contain total different chemical compositions where feathers contain rich in protein and frills have more keratin components. Also, the archaeologists found the fine lines were contained more protein which is the proof of feathers but not the frills.
Finally, it is mentioned in the paragraph that the structure of fine lines would have been useless for flight since it was located along the backbone and the tail of the animal which suggests that the lines do not present feathers. On the other hand, speakers again opposed the solution by giving an example of a peacock which has colorful feathers located at the backbone, and they display that colorful feathers to attract a mate. Thus, it might be possible that the feathers that were found from dinosaurs serve the same purpose since researchers have found those colorful too. Therefore, this theory is also not convincing and rejected by the lecturer.
