The reading and the lecture are both about what might have caused the odd sound in the Russian submarines. The author provides three theories about what might have caused the strange sound.Howere, the professor explains that experts have few problems with these theories and provides arguments for each theory.
Afairst, the author suggests that the calls of male and female Orca whales may cause the sound. In response, the professor explains that Orcas live near the water surface and the submarines remain deep in the ocean and shouldn’t be able to hear sounds occur near the surface.
Second, the author claims that the second theory is that the sound is caused by the giant squid. In contrast, the professor said that as we know that squids continue to live there today, If this sound was caused by squids it wouldn’t have disappeared after two decades.
Finally, the author states that the third theory is that the sound was caused by a secret submarine from another country. In response, the professor contends on this point by saying that the sound was moving around and changing direction quickly but the submarines can’t move or change direction quickly. Also, she mentioned that we don’t have the technology to build submarines with a silent engine
