Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses Steller's sea cows which were first founded by G.W. Steller in 1741 around Siberia, and they were became extinct in 1768. The author states that there are several viable theories regarding this extinction. That being said, the lecturer provides several reasons to repudiate this claim.
Initially, the writer says that population of the sea cows had been quite large before Siberian people started to overhunt these marine animals, as their source of food in a severe environment. However, the speaker explains that the sea cows were massive creatures, with ten tones weights and nine meters length; couple of these animals could be used by Siberian villages for months. Since the Siberian population were not large, they did not have to start an overhunting process.
Second, the author proclaims that ecosystem fluctuations affected populations of kelp, which were food source of the sea cows and directly related to population decrease of the sea cows. Yet again, the lecturer underscores that if any severe ecological changes occurred before 1768, there would be seen different decreases not only in kelp populations but also, in other marine species, such as whales. But according to reports of local fisher men, never did any fisher men announce any decline in whales' populations. Thus, ecological changes could not have been counted as a main reason of the sea cows' extinctions.
The final point of contention between the reading and the listening passage is European traders. The author thinks that using special weapons for hunting large groups of sea cow, European traders causes the sea cows' extinction. On the other hand, the speaker explains that the population of sea cows had started to decline hundred years before 1700s, in which European traders came to this place. Although, never should the European traders be counted as the causes for the extinction, if any researcher want to find out the main reason, s/he should investigate conditions right after the decline started.
