TPO 34 Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia It was described in 1741 by Georg W Steller a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

Based on given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses main causes of a huge marine mammal known as Steller's sea cow extinction. The author states three theories that could be responsible of extinction. That being said, the lecturer provides several ideas to repudiate these theories.

Initially, the author says that the sea cows might have been overhunted by groups of native Siberian people. However, the lecturer explains that they were massive creatures which had nine meters length. In addition, a couple of them were adequate for native Siberian to provide food sources for months. Thus, it could not be a reasonable theory for extinction.

Second, the writer proclaims that ecosystems disturbances that caused a decline in their main source of food. Yet again, the speaker underscores this assumption. He thinks, if this theory had happened, it would have affected other marines such as whales. Based on that there was not a serious decline in population of other marines, the theory seems incorrect.

The final point of contention between reading and listening passages is the possibility of extinction by European fur traders. The author thinks European fur traders who came to the island after 1741 could be main reason of extinction. On the other hand, the speaker explains that sea cows extincted soon after when European have arrived. Beside of that, when the European arrived to Bering Island, the population of Steller's sea cow was already quite small. Because of these reasons, European fur traders were not tangible causes of sea cows' extinction.
