The reading passage claims that there are several theories describe the mass extinction and elimination of many different species at the end of the Triassic period. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some impeccable evidence to refute them all.
First, the author embraces the idea that sea level had fluctuated and the decrease in sea level created some problems for species, which lived in shallow water. In contrast, the lecturer underlines the fact that although scientists agreed with the decline of sea level, it has occurred over several years. So, this mass extinction takes place during a short period of time.
The author also holds the view that massive volcanic eruption caused Solphore Dioxide emitted to the atmosphere and cooling climate took place during this period, which caused extinction. On the contrary, the professor brings up the idea that this process is still present in the atmosphere and help the atmosphere be clearer and combine with other materials to cause rain. So, hardly can this process caused mass extinction during a Triassic period.
Finally, as set forth by the author asteroid hits the earth could be another explanation for this extinction because it blocked sunlight long enough for species to die. Conversely, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that very few scientists believe this fact because no site hitting by the asteroid has been found. In fact, despite founding crater in some places, it is dated to two million years before extinction happened.
Having scrutinized all the premises, a logical conclusion that can be drawn is that there are pieces of evidence having been ignored by the author while the presence of which could strengthen the author's claim.
