TPO 39 integrated essay
In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses three theories for mass-extention at the end of the triassic period. While in the listening the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and believes that none of these theories are good explnation for this mass-extinction.
First of all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that the sea level flactuation cased destroytion of coast areas which follow with significant changes in food chains worldwide, led to extinction of most specises. However, the professor claims that the coast areas have ability of adapt with gradually environmental changes, and this gradual change in sea level taken millioms years.
In addition, the professor disagree with this idea that the global cooling happened as result of volcanic activities that brought up high concenration of so2 in atmosphere. She says that it is true that so2 in atmosphere can have cooling effect, nonetheless the so2 do not remain on atmosphere for the long time. The so2 in the air fall back to ground by rain quickly.
Finally, yet importantly, in the text, it is stated that an asteroid collision to earth cased termendus environmental change and mass-extinction. The professor subscribes that the archeologists did not find any crater that dated to the end of triassic period.
