TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task

The issue both the reading and the listening focus on is the maintenance of human presence on Venus, but the listening proposes a solution to challenges given in the reading.

At the first point, the reading states that the atmospheric pressure on Venus's surface is too large, at least 90 times greater the Earth's surface pressure. This means that spacecraft landing on Venus would be crushed by the extreme pressure. According to the listening, a place 50 kilometers above the surface has the normal pressure similar to that on Earth. Therefore, there would be no fear of crushed spacecrafts.

At the second point, the reading mentions that there are no reservoirs of water on Venus, and its atmosphere is mostly made up of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid. For that reason, water and oxygen would have to be supplied form Earth. However, the listening argues that water and oxygen can be produced using chemicals obtained from compounds found on Venus. Therefore, humans can create water and oxygen without needing supply from Earth.

At the third point, the reading believes that about 60 percent of the sunlight is reflected back by thick clouds, and some of the remaining sunlight are blocked by a layer of carbon dioxide below the clouds. Thus, very little light can reach the surface, and humans cannot get electricity from solar cells. On the contrary, the listening confirms that while a place above the carbon dioxide layer is still blocked by clouds, humans can use solar cells to utilize sunlight from both below the clouds and reflected above the clouds. Hence, solar energy can be created.
