Concerns about having more strict regulations for companies who deal with a dangerous waste material, coal ash, are increasing. Environmentalists are totally insisting on more regulations while power companies are disagreed with.
First, as a concrete reason for power companies, they point out that the regulations exist already while environmentalists assert that the existed regulations do not cover all the aspects of the harmfulness of coal ash. For example, companies are obliged to use the liner in the ponds and landfills they will build, but the existed ponds or landfills are not included in the regulations. Therefore, old ponds and landfills are likely contaminating soil and ground waters now. So there is a huge need for new regulations.
Second, companies are worried about the recycled material based on coal ash. They claim if the regulations about the coal ash increase, people would stop using these kinds of products because consumers think the products are too dangerous. However, Environmentalists contend that Mercury, as an example of a waste material which is recycled for 50 years, has the same situation. The use of Mercury-recycled products hasn't declined and thus, this will happens for the products based on coal ash recycled.
Third, environmentalists are agreed that the costs of companies would increase dramatically but they also think that it worth a lot. In the case of power companies, the cost of electricity would increase just one percent and it is not a big price. It is worth to pay this cost to have a more healthy environment.
