The reading passage contends that there are three solutions which prevent injuries to birds by glasses as building material. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the validity of the reading passage that replacing the regular and clear glass with one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction is a solution. This is attributed to the fact that even if the regular glasses replaced with one-way glass, birds could not recognize replaced glasses. In addition, the replaced glasses reflect every object they face, such as sky and themselves, thus causing them fly into the glasses. Thus, the reading passage’s first solution is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer cast doubt on the point in the reading passage that painting colorful lines or other designs on regular window glass could resolve the problem. This is because it is true that people would recognize the window glass; however, birds would not recognize the presence of that. And they would consider as dark hole when they see the glass because it is too dark for them. Consequently, the reading passage’s second solution is refuted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the solution in the reading passage that creating an artificial magnetic held could guide birds away from buildings. It is obvious that although birds have a natural ability to sense Earth’s magnetic fields, they are not able to take advantage of the ability. This is due to the fact that they are able to use that ability when they migrate in long distance, not short distance. In addition, when they fly in short distance, they utilize their eyes for navigate their directions. As a result, the reading passage’s last solution is contradicted.
