The reading and the lecture are both about glass that harms birds because they can not distinguish the clear glass from the open air. The author of the reading believes that there are three applicable methods to change the glass in a way that birds can recognize it. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that none of them is effective and still many birds are hurt by glass.
First of all, the author claims that one-way glass, that is a kind of glass which people can see outside of the window but people out of the building can not see inside of it, can be helpful. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that not only one-way glass does not help birds to recognize it, but also since one side of the glass is mirror and reflects the sky or trees, they mistakenly fly toward them.
Secondly, the author states that using colorful patterns can be beneficial. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. He suggests that in this case some parts of glass which have no colorful patterns are taken into account as holes by birds and they fly toward them. This solution is only applicable if colors completely cover glass that is impossible because the building will be dark.
Finally, the author mentions that using artificial magnetic field can be advantageous.
The lecturer, on the other hand, feels that it is not an efficient solution because birds only use their ability of magnetic sensation at the time of immigration and long travels. In their short flies, they just use their eyes to fly to the destination. Hence, when they do not use their ability of finding the right direct according to the earth's magnetic field, creating an artificial magnetic field around the buildings is not useful.
