The article introduces the topic of harm caused by building glasses on birds. More specifically, the writer discusses three solutions to overcome this problem. The lecturer strongly disagrees with the author's stance. He believes that these methods can not effectively stop birds from crashing into glasses.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that one method is to use one-way glasses so that people in the building can see outside, but birds will see the glass as a solid barrier. The lecturer, however, completely disagrees with this viewpoint. He contends that one-way glasses reflect like mirrors and birds don't understand mirrors. Additionally, he goes on to say that these glasses reflect the sky and trees, therefore, birds are going to think that they can fly through it.
Furthermore, the author proposes that the second solution is to paint thin stripes over the glasses. By doing this, people can enjoy the scene, as well as birds won't damage themselves. Again, the lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer's argument. The speaker asserts that these stripes include openings in them. As a result, birds are going to perceive them as holes and try to pass through them. Moreover, he mentions that if we want to prevent this we have to make the small between stripes very small, which can make the room dark. Consequently, this idea won't work either.
Finally, the writer brings his argument to a close by suggesting that the third way is to create a magnetic field to guide birds away from the building. In contrast, the professor in the speaking passage is doubtful that this is accurate. He notes that birds use their magnetic sense as a navigator when they want to travel long distances. In addition, he claims that birds use their eyes and the environment's light for short distances. Consequently, this technique won't have much effect on this matter.
To sum up, both the author and professor hold conflicting views about the effectiveness of the methods presented in the reading.
