The reading and lecture both discuss the silver coin that found at American archaeological site. While the reading provides three claims to support idea that this coin is not genuine historical evidence, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading avers that this coin had been discovered at place where is far away from the areas of norse settlements. On the other hand, the professor argues this notion by saying that this great distance between Native american site and canada does not mean that this coin is fake. Moreover, Norse settlements came from lonf distance places and native american traveled great diatance. So, they are interested to obtain pbjects from Canada with them. As a result, this is coin is genuine historical evidence.
Secondly, the article states that there is no other coins had been found in these places. So, this coin is fake. However, the professor rejects this idea by pointing out that other coins are not necessary to confirm that coin is authentic. Furthermore, Norse did not create perminant settlements at Canada. In fact, they came back to Europe. So, they packed all silver coins with them. Consequently, they took all other coins with them.
Lastly, the article mentions that the Norse did not use the coins as money for trading. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by explaining that Norse knew that native americain's objects are attractive. For instance, they used the beauty silver to make nickles and jewlers. In addition, as long as Norse used attractive coins for other purposes, they did not used it as money for trade.
