In this set of materials, the reading passage claims that archaeologists found an ancient silver coin dating to the eleven century which is originally from Europe. They believe that the coin is fake for three possible reasons. However, the lecturer finds all the idea dubious and provides some evidence to support the opinions of other scientists who think it is authentic.
First of all, the article asserts that the coin was located very far from Norse settlement who had the coin in possession which strengthens the theory that there is no connection between the coin and Norse settlement. In contrast, the professor argue that Native American in Maine traveled a lot and they could obtain and bring this coin from one of their voyages to east Canada because there many other objects that came from far places. Hence, the first reason of the passage is not strong enough to dispute the coin.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading that there is no other coin in the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the Norse. On the contrary, the lecturer contends that the Norse took coins back to Europe when they left Canada. It is not reasonable to leave those silver coins for other people so they packed all silver coins. Therefore, no more coin does not show that it is fake.
Finally, the author of passage declares that North American did not recognize silver coin as money so there is no explanation why they seized it. Conversely, the professor states that although it is true they were not aware of the coin value, they were interested in unusual items. Beautiful objects were appealing for Native American because they could use them to produce necklace or other jewelries. This reason can be a good illustration why they traded the coin.
