The reading passage and the lecture are both about whether the coin is a genuine historical record or not. The reading passage states that the coin which was discovered in the state of Maine in the United States is historical fake and brings three reasons to support this idea. The lecturer casts doubt on the reading’s standpoint and refutes it by providing three reasons.
Firstly, the reading passage believes that Norse brought the coin to the north of America and then native American explored the coin; but, Maine was far from the other sits which Norse settled such as Canada; therefore, the coin was not a real connection between settlements. The lecturer refutes this point. She says that native American traveled long distances. Also, they always brought back many other important things. Maybe, they brought back the coin to Maine when they traveled to the Norse settlements.
Secondly, the reading passage says that there were not any other coins in Canadian settlements. Hence, the Norse did not bring silver coins to their North American settlements. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that the Norse always packed their important materials. presumably, they might pack their all coins to bring back them to Europe.
Finally, the reading passage states that silver coins were useless for the Norse who lived in North American settlements; because American people did not use coins such as money. In contrast, the lecturer challenges this point. She believes that the Norse understood the importance of the coins. They used the coins as a jewelry in neckless construction; and also, they trade the coins as an important commercial material.
