The author of the reading passage and the professor both discuss whether the bees existed for 200 million years ago due to the unearthed fossil structures which are discovered in Arizona. The author is against the idea and raises three viewpoints. However, the professor indicates that the author’s theories contain some defects.
First of all, the author claims that the earliest fossils can be found is 100 million years ago, there is no genuine bees’ body ever be found can be traced back to 200 million years ago. In the contrary, the professor disagrees. Even though the fact is true, there is another explanation for this occurrence. There are some trees which produce the sticky liquid, resin, could be able to preserve the structures of bees. These kinds of trees are rarely back to 200 million years ago. Therefore, bees may exist in 200 million years ago, but there were no trees released resin to preserve the nest.
In addition, the author states that according to the biological relationship which is observed nowadays between the bees and the flowering plants are connected very closely. In 200 million years ago, there are not much of flowering plants back then. On the contrary, the professor questions the idea by saying that early bees don't feed on the flowering plants by instead feeding on the non-flowering trees such as pine trees. Indeed, they may adopt the flowering plants after they started sprouting.
Finally, the author raises the point that the real nest chambers have caps, but the fossilized structures don’t have ones. As a result, the professor contends that there is chemical evidence can prove the fossilized structures are made by bees. The bees use the waterproof substance to protect their nest from the water. After the chemical analysis of the fossilized structures, it is discovered that they have these waterproof materials too. Turn out, these fossils are related to the bees.
