The author states that many frog species around the world is declining because of various problems. He tells that the frogs are important as they eat disease carrying insects and thus he suggests three ideas to protect them. However, the professor in the follow up material cast doubt on these ideas by providing valid justifications.
First, the author tells that the frogs are threatened due to heavy use of pesticides as they damage the nervous system of it. In contrast, the lecturer says that it will be unfair to those farmers who do farming in the areas close to threatened places as they are totally dependent on pesticides for the growth of crop. If they will be restrained from using it then they will have less amount of crop as compared to the other farmers who are free to use pesticides and hence they will have to bear huge lose.
Second, the reading tells that the fungus is a major cause for the reduced population of frog as it prevents them from absorbing water by creating thick skin and result in their death and advice to apply antifungal treatment. The professor opposes this point and explains that it is a very tedious and expensive procedure because antifungal treatment has to be applied on each frog individually and does not pass on the protection to its offspring and so it has to be applied on these off springs as well. Therefore, this solution is not at all practical.
Third, the speaker mentions that the notion written in the passage is to prohibit the human beings from using the lakes and marshes is absolutely inappropriate as the actual reason behind the disappearance of lakes and marshes is “Global Warming” which is responsible for many species extinction. Thus, even after human being will be stopped from using them, the problem will still persist. So, the professor refutes all three ideas suggested by the author to save frogs.
