In recent years, many frog species around the world have declined in numbers or even gone extinct due to changes in their environment. These population declines and extinctions have serious consequences for the ecosystems in which frogs live; for example, frogs help play a role in protecting humans by eating disease-carrying insects. Several methods have been proposed to solve the problem of declining frog populations.
The reading passage discusses several methods to solve the problem of declining frog populations. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading passage.
First, the author claims that imposing law restrictions on the usage of pesticides near sensitive frog populations by farmers would cause a dramatic effect on slowing down the decline of frog populations. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that this method is not economically reliable. It would cause problems for farmers near these frog populations since they lose a large amount of their crops. Therefore, it becomes difficult for them to stay active in competitive markets of crops.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that special treatments on a large scale could treat the infections caused by the spread of a detrimental fungus around the world. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that applying the method is not practical. Because every frog should be treated individually. Therefore, each frog in every target region should be captured and treated which seems almost impossible. In additions, the treatment does not have prolonged impact and the effects aren't passed to the next generation. Thus, the new offsprings should be treated as well.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that to reduce threatens of the frogs' natural habitats human activities such as water use should be limited. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that although restricting human activities such as protection from excessive water use could be beneficial, this process actually does not have any noticeable effect on recovering frog populations. In fact, global warming has been the real threat to water resources. Consequently, since global warming is the major factor which causes the loss of a lot of species every year, it is unlikely that limiting human activities be helpful and bring about influential results.
