humpback whales, stars navigation
The listening and the reading materials have a debate on possibility of using star for navigating in humpback whales through their immigration. The penman puts forward 3 main hupotheses, which are refuted by the following orator.
First of all, the writer proposes that brain of whales are so advanced to be able for tracking stars. As a result they use from their intelligency for finding their way during the immigration path. On the contrary, the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. According to him, there is no relation between intelligency and navigating ability, because there are some kinds of birds, which have used from navigating but they have not high intelligency.
The second aspect offered by the author is that moving in stright lines demonstrate whales are useing vision things for finding their way along far distances and because they can not rely on terrain marks they may use stars. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on this assumption by saying th at biomagnetic abilities in whals's brain will help them to orient according to earth's magnetic field. As a result, it is no need to count on stars.
Last, the reading passage suggests that spy-hopping- staying stright up for several minutes at a time- as a special behaviour showing that whales can see stars for navigating. However, the professor holds a different view. He explains that there are some other animals like sharks which using spy-hopping for other aimes such as hunting and they do not immigrate. Thus, it does not mean that they use stars as marker.
Overall, the ideas mentioned in the speach counter the opinions in the text according to above reasons.
