The author in the reading passage holds that there are several problems of sending humans to Mars, which the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite opinion.

To begin with, the author claims that the round-trip to the Mars can last at least two years, which makes it hard to carry enough supplies of food, water and oxygen due to limited cargo capacity of spaceships. However, the lecturer refutes that this problem can be perfectly solved by conducting hydroponics, a method of growing plant in water rather than in soil. This allows astronauts to cultivate food crop in spaceship that can not only serve as meals but also recycle waste water and convert it into clean water vapor for drinking. In addition, these plants also absorb CO2 as well as release oxygen during the photosynthesis.

Moreover, the author believes that spending such a long time in the zero-gravity environment is harmful to human body, as it is likely to decrease muscle mass and lower bone density. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that it can be prevented by learning necessary technics, since many astronauts had already lived in zero-gravity environment for several months in the space station in last few decades. For example, doing regular exercise and taking vitamins prevent astronauts from losing muscle mass and reducing bone density.

Finally, the author puts forward that the radiation emitted by the Sun is extremely dangerous. Instead, the lecturer retorts that the radiation does not remain at such a high level all the time but occurs occasionally. This means that under most circumstances, astronauts can do normal business, and they are able to stay in a small shelter that does not add much weight to the spaceship, once the radiation, which can be monitored by special instruments, becomes radical.
