The reading states that there are ways to improve the situation of a salty lake. However, the professor in the lecture says that although it is great to do so but the given solutions are not viable.
For example, the reading proposes that some special facility can be used to desalinate the lake. As mentioned, the process includes pumping water from lake, heating it, and cooling the vapor down to produce salt-free water. However, the professor asserts that using such a process will have consequences. According to the lecturer, there might be chemicals other than salt in the solid metrial remained from heating which can cause damage to people. For example, celenium is a material that can be found in the remnants and can be toxic for the people who breath it. Therefore, implementing special devices to desalinate lake water can result in health issues.
As an another example, the reading states that the lake water can be diluted by entering the ocean water to it. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this solution by stating that executing this plan needs constructing pipelines or canals. In fact, the local government has not enough resources to sponsor these projects. What is more, there is a 100 km distance between the ocean and the lake, hence, the project will be a huge one and thus it will require a lot of money that the local government, probably, cannot afford.
Also, the reading discusses dividing the lake by means of walls and let the rivers discharge only into the main division of it. However, the professor declares that such a solution will not work for long period of time because the region is prone to natural accidents such as earthquake that can destroy the walls, and lead to different divisions of lake be mixed again.
