The reading and the lecture are both about the ways of reducing salt in the Salton Sea in California. The author of the reading presents three solutions to reduce the salt content in the lake. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article by saying that those three ways are not realistic and practical.

First and foremost, the article states that the salt content could be reduced by desalination process. It is mentioned that this process would evaporate the water and get mixed into the stream at the same time other solid materials are remained. The lecturer is challenged by the statement. She says that the desalination process would lead to other concern where solid material that is present may contain chemicals that are toxic can lead to serious health problems to human.

Secondly, the author contends by referring to diluting the salts water by bringing with Pacific Ocean water by constructing pipelines or canals. The lecturer rebuts this statement. She argues that the in order to build canals or pipeline which would incur more resources that are very In addition to that Pacific ocean is 100 km away from Salton lake where it will be very expensive to build canals or pipelines.

Last but not least, the author states that the salinity of the ocean could be reduced by building walls to make sections. The sections can separate water with more salt content in one section and other sections with less salt content. The lecturer, on the other Hand posits that this method would not work because the area is more prone to frequent geological destruction where it can break the walls. As a result, the chances are the water can be get mixed together in the event of earthquake because of broken wall that can’t last longer.
